Principal Lena Zhang has focused on providing full architectural services in the Bay Area for high end residential and small commercial projects.  Prior to starting Z Studio Architects in 2001, Lena worked as a designer and project architect for Rafael Viñoly Architects and KMD in San Francisco, where she led the firm's projects both in China and the States.  With an M.Arch. from New York State University, Buffalo, and a B.S. in Building Structural Engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, Lena’s combined knowledge in both fields has bolstered her efforts on many challenging projects. 

Lena has been a guest critic for architectural design studios at Stanford University and UC Berkeley, a speaker at the GSD Asia Conference, Harvard University; the Haas Business School Lecture Series, UC Berkeley.  Her publications include “Place Making”, and “Some Thoughts about Civic Architecture”, Time and Architecture, Shanghai, China. 

Among her avocations Lena is an artist, currently active as the founder of a watercolorist group in the Bay Area
