Hillside Terrace House in Orinda, California

This project transformed a small single story downslope hillside structure into a three-story house of more than 5,100 SF.  Situated on a three-quarter acre wooded hill,  the living quarters take advantage of the magnificent mountain views to the east.

The front entry of the house was relocated from the west streetside to the mountain view east side, with the new middle level containing the new public entry.  The new entry is emphasized by a processional descending down a paved stone path through the oak studded surroundings.

At the end of the procession one is greeted by an oversized bright orange-colored mahogany door.  Inside, the interiors are light-filled, commanding great views, and with simple and elegant touches of modernism.

The top level consists of the kitchen, dining, master suite and additional bedroom, while the middle level is home to three more bedrooms as well as a large entrainment space with decks.  On the lowest level are four  more bedrooms and a large media family room.

Working with the natural contours adding level outdoor space in the backyard, a new front terrace and front entry walkway add a horizontal dimension to the property.  And on the inside, finally, utilizing the slope of the land to create the terraced house together with the creation of the open stair, connects the multiple levels both visually and physically.
